Nonostante l'agopuntura sia un trattamento consolidato nella terapia del dolore del cancro ed i suoi risultati siano stati ampiamente riportati negli ultimi vent'anni, c'è ancora una controversia sulla sua maggior afficacia rispetto ad un placebo.
La ricerca è stata effettuata utilizzando i dati contenuti nei data base: Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (The Cochrane Library, Issue 3, 2008), EMBASE, PubMed, ScienceDirect database, Current Controlled Trials, Chongqin VIP database and CNKI ed è terminata nel giugno 2008.
I ricercatori anno analizzato manualmente anche sei giornali cinesi correlati con la questione.
I criteri di inclusione nella meta analisi hanno riguardato tutti gli studi randomizzati (randomized controlled trials RCTs) che comparavano l'agopuntura con placebo, farmaci occidentali, fitofarmarmaci cinesi o comparavano terapia con agopuntura più farmaci con trattamento solo con farmaci.
I risultati hanno evidenziato che, in uno studio molto approfondito, la terapia di agopuntura auricolare dava risultati significativamente superiori al placebo. In altri sei studi di minore qualità emergeva che l'agopuntura aveva alcuni effetti positivi, mentre altri studi erano stati esclusi in quanto non paragonabili per l'uso di metodologie differenti.
